Yoga mats come in different sizes, but there are some universal averages. The standard yoga mat length usually varies from 68 to 70 inches (172 to 177 cm), and its width is around 24 inches (60 cm). Although manufacturers can choose the dimensions of their product, 68-70 inches in length is considered the industry standard.

But keep in mind that this is the average mat, which reflects the average high of individuals in the world. Shorter and taller individuals can and should look for longer or shorter solutions. The same applies to the width. The first and most important function of the mat is to be suitable to the individual’s needs and to be comfortable.

Besides the mainstream yoga mat size, which is around 68 to 70 inches long, there are also more specific standards for different categories. So, the usual classification looks like this:

  • The standard yoga mat is 68 to 70 inches (172 – 177 cm) long.
  • The tall yoga mat is 70 to 75 inches (180-190 cm) long.
  • The extra-long mat is 75 to 84 inches (190-215cm) long.

There are also smaller versions, usually classified as kids’ versions, and are around 60 inches (152 cm) long with a width range from 18 to 24 inches.

How to Choose the Length of Your Yoga Mat

Choosing the length of your yoga mat is a pretty straightforward process.  There’s a general rule of thumb for the height/length ratio, but you can choose whatever feels most comfortable.

Some experts and brands recommend buying a yoga mat that is 2 to 5 inches (5-12 cm) longer than your height, while others say that 7 to 10 inches (15-25 cm) longer mat is even better. So, thinking about your options, maybe try both formulas and make a choice.

Just keep in mind that your arms and legs, hands and feet, shouldn’t hang out of your mat while you are doing a downward-facing dog or when you’re lying on the mat.

Another way to choose a mat is to stick to the following formula.

  • If you’re 5’5 (167 cm) or shorter, stick to the standard 68 to 70-inch mat.
  • If you’re between 5’6″ and 6′ (170 and 185 cm) tall, the 72 to 75-inch mat would be your best choice.
  • If you’re over 6′ (185 cm) tall, go for the 75 to 84-inch mat.

But you should keep one more thing in mind: the surroundings where you practice yoga. If you practice alone in the privacy of your home, your mat can be as big as you want.

On the other hand, if you practice it in a crowded studio, you may want to choose the standard version so as not to obstruct other people’s workouts.

Conclusion

There are a lot of options on the market when it comes to yoga mats, different lengths and different widths. You should choose the one that corresponds the most with your body type and is also suitable for the environment where you practice yoga.
